Is a siberian Husky Right For you?? Siberian Huskies are beautiful animals, But before you decide to get one, figure out if the two of you are a good match. Huskies require an enormous amount of attention. They are strong-willed animals, and most of them do better with an experienced dog owner. This doesn't mean that you can't have a Siberian for your first dog; it does mean you should know what to expect. Some people consider Huskies stubborn, but it is more accurate to say that they are determined and persevering — necessary qualities in a good sled dog. Siberian Huskies are strong, compact, working dogs. The Siberian Husky comes in all colors from black to pure white are allowed. A variety of markings on the head is common, including many striking patterns not found in other breeds.
Color choices go from black to pure white, which ranges from light (dilute) to dark (jet), Red and White, which ranges from light (peach or orange) to dark (chocolate or brown), Gray and White, which ranges from light (silver) to dark (wolf-gray), Sable and White (which is red-orange with black tips), Agouti and White (which is sometimes referred to as the coyote color and contains a lot of dark gray coat), and White (not to be confused with a Samoyed). Different coat markings are all accepted, the most notable being a pie-bald. These coat markings are similar to that of a pinto horse. The face mask and underbody are usually white, and the remaining coat any color.
Living with a Siberian Husky Siberians are very smart dogs and love attention. They hate to be alone, they are considered a pack animal and need either the company of another dog or a stable family. They were bred to be amazing with children. The Chukchi people loved these dogs and had lots of respect for them. They housed them in the family shelters and encouraged their children to play with them. Siberins do not bark, they talk. They make a soft woo woo woo sound. And they can also howl quite well. The Siberian is alert, eager to please and adaptable. An agressive dog is not a team dog and makes for a lousy sled dog. Sledding! We have a rig for the summer and a sled for winter. We hook our huskies up almost every weekend and go for about 2 miles. Our huskies love getting out and running is really fun for us. We hope to get other husky owners into this. The dogs are all doing extremely well at learning the commands and working together, and we have noticed a huge change in behavior with our huskies ever since we started hooking them up. We have had a lot less fighting and more calm, relaxed dogs. My runner has stopped running away but instead she waits for us to put her harness on then she stands in her place waiting to be tied on. Its such a huge relief to have happy balanced dogs. I don't wish to scare people away from wanting a husky like most breeders do by saying they are escape artists and run away love to dig etc I will say this breed is an amazing breed that will teach the owner responsibility. Huskies do almost always need to be on a leash. All dogs need to, its the law in most places. That does not mean your husky can't learn to be off leash and stay with you.
I have huskies that don't run away. I can let all 8 huskies out in my unfenced pasture and have no problem with them leaving because I exercise them regularly. This may not work for every husky, if your still having problems seek professional help. I strongly believe that the parents disposition is a very important factor to wether your dog will obey you or not because temperament is a trait. 2. Huskies do dig if you don't supply a way for them to keep cool in the summer. We use a kiddy pool for them to lay in and that has almost eliminated digging. They also dig seeking shade so make sure they have plenty of it. 3. If you live in an apartment this is not your breed of dog! They need space and a very active family to be with. If you do live in an apartment this dog could become your worst nightmare.
A bored & unhappy husky is a mischievous creature and will look for a way out. Huskies are smart and will try to escape if not given the attention they need. Of corse this is true of almost any dog. Siberians are very healthy dogs in the sense that they do not have all those sad health problems the toy breeds have such as genetic mutations, seizures, joint & heart problems etc. All the huskies have to worry about are hips & eyes and its a 2% out of 13000 chance they will ever have those problems. Huskies have been ranked one of the most healthiest breeds. If socialized with children as a puppy huskies are known for how forgiving and gentle they are with them, however never introduce a husky to a child if that husky has not been socialized with children! Huskies that seem gentle to you were socialized with adults but finding out it wasn't socialized with children is not worth having a child hurt. Siberians do "Blow" aka shed their undercoat 2x a year for about 3 weeks other than that the rest of the time they are relativly shed free. Just your typical brush off the old hair to keep the coat looking fresh & shiny is all you need to do. You should also clip the nails and trip the hair on their feet. They are like cats and will clean themselves, 1 bath a year is all thats recommended. Huskies are typically free from body odor and Parasites.
I encourage you to keep your husky out side, its ok to have an indoor/out door husky but this breed is a free spirit and enjoys being out side. Practice being the pack leader.. I like the way the dog wisperer works with dogs by being calm and assertive. Never let your husky sleep with you! 1. The pack leader always sleeps away from the pack 2. It confuses your dog, they start wondering if they should step up and be the pack leader and that can cause problems. 3. Dogs are social and like having that social structure but in a home we have to create one and we have to be the Pack leader if we want a well balanced dog.
Vets: Where to begin? "Think about this: People receive one vaccination early in life and it lasts a lifetime. Why are animals any different? I have a link to a book that may interest you: I take my dogs to Coleman Veterinary Hospital, voted #1 vet hospital in utah county and it was mentioned in the daily herald. Dr. Coleman is an amazing vet! He is funny and really good with the animals also he doesn't over charge you for his services and wont add up every little thing like most vets. His staff even answers questions over the phone so you don't even have to take your pet in. They are the only vet I will ever go to. CVH address= 3145 N Canyon Road Provo. Phone: 1-801-812-2077
